COATESVILLE, PA-State and local officials are hoping that a multi-million dollar upgrade of the underutilized Amtrak station here will spark new development around the station and invigorate the redevelopment of the blighted downtown district.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Amtrak have allocated about $18 million toward the station improvement project, and the county has set aside approximately $700,000, according to The Inquirer.
Officials at the Chester County Economic Development Council hope the project encourages business growth and development. The station "has potential to be a real precipitating factor in a lot of other economic development factors in Coatesville," says Ryan Costello, the chairman of the county board of commissioners. The project helped convince Lincoln University to open a satellite campus down the street from the train station next month. See story in The Inquirer.
