WASHINGTON, DC-President Barack Obama will kick off a series of speeches aimed at refocusing Congress' attention on the economy and the plight of the middle class at an event on Wednesday at Knox College in Illinois.

The Galesburg, IL-based school was the site of a commencement speech Obama gave as a US Senator in 2005 when he advocated for retraining and education to prepare workers for foreign competition, according to the Wall Street Journal.

His speech on Wednesday will touch upon broad economic themes. In subsequent addresses he will present old and new policy ideas involving manufacturing, health care, jobs, housing and education, the White House reported on Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday, Dan Pfeiffer, a senior White House adviser, says, "The president thinks Washington has largely taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country. Instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles and trump up phony scandals."

Pfeiffer also notes that the president intends in his upcoming economic speeches to "chart a course where America needs to go—not just in the next three months or even the next three years, but a steady, persistent effort over the long term." See story in the Wall Street Journal.
