NEW YORK CITY-There are now more people on the waiting list for New York City Housing Authority apartments than there are public housing apartments in the system.

There are currently 227,000 individuals and families on the Housing Authority's waiting list representing approximately 500,000 people that are looking for public housing, according to the New York Times. The city's public housing stock totals 178,900 apartments. The wait for many will be long since only on average between 5,400 to 5,800 public housing units become available each year.

“It's become harder and harder to be able to afford a rental unit in the open market,” says Victor Bach, a senior housing policy analyst with the research and advocacy group Community Service Society. “Whether employment is up or down, the rents keep rising inexorably.” See story in the New York Times.
