NEW YORK CITY-As a means to win critics over on its $500-million expansion project at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the US Tennis Association announced on Wednesday it will pay $10 million for projects at Flushing Meadows in Queens.

As recently as last week, the USTA had offered $2 million for park improvements in connection with its expansion project, according to Crain's New York Business. The City Council subsequently approved the $500-million project Wednesday afternoon.

The $10 million in park funding will help pay for capital projects in the park as well as fund a newly established park conservancy. The New York City Council's Land Use Committee voted in favor of the USTA expansion plan on Wednesday morning, and the full City Council approved it by an overwhelming 47-1 margin later that afternoon.
