JACKSONVILLE, FL-At a speech on Thursday at Jaxport Cruise Terminal, President Barack Obama called on Congress to increase infrastructure investment, but did not talk specifics on what projects he would like to see funded at the port.

“We know strong infrastructure is a key ingredient to a thriving economy. That's how the United States became the best place in the world to do business,” Obama said. “Unfortunately, over the past two years, too many folks in Washington have been cutting these investments. “

The President discussed the emergence of large container ships that will traverse an expanded Panama Canal and added, "We want those supertankers coming here to Jacksonville,” he said.

However, the President did not discuss specific projects of import, such as the possible deepening of the St. John's River shipping channel, according to the Jacksonville Business Journal.

“I hope he's interested in getting us to deep water because it's critical to our import and export business in Northeast Florida,” Daniel Davis, president of the Jax Chamber of Commerce, said prior to the president's speech. See story in the Jacksonville Business Journal.
