WASHINGTON, DC-LA Fitness has signed close to 166,000 square feet in the DC area since the beginning of the year, according to Next Realty, which is representing the fitness chain. Nor has it stopped scouting new locations in the area, Next Realty's Ray Schupp tells GlobeSt.com. The chain is taking an opportunistic approach to expansion – that is, if it sees a good opportunity it will pursue it, but doesn't necessarily have a set number of facilities it wants to open.

That said, it is still actively looking. Schupp says that the fitness company prefers locations that have access to strong daytime employment and a solid residential base.

So far, it has taken:

  • 31,453 square feet at Bowie Town Center in Bowie, MD, where it will occupy the former Bed Bath & Beyond space.
  • 40,903 square feet at Watkins Park Plaza, in Mitchellville, MD. It has leased the former Safeway grocery store and will anchor the shopping center.
  • 45,540 square feet at Davis Ford Crossing in Manassas, VA. LA Fitness will anchor the shopping center, and will occupy a former grocery store space.
  • 48,000 square feet at Towson Commons in Towson, MD. LA Fitness will anchor the retail redevelopment of the retail space at Towson Commons, occupying the former movie theater on two levels.

The fitness chain now has 21 facilities in DC, Maryland and Virginia.
