ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ-While no official action was taken at the session, on Wednesday, many members of the Bergen County Board of Freeholders expressed their support for the controversial LG Electronics North American headquarters building to be built here.
More than 120 members of the local construction trades attended the freeholders meeting in support of the project, according to The Record. LG is looking to build its new 143-foot high headquarters on a 27-acre site at 111 Sylvan Ave. at the former Prentice-Hall property. The headquarters would rise above the tree line and therefore obstruct views of the Palisades, according to opponents of the project.
Labor officials say that some union trades have experienced 40% to 50% unemployment during the recession.
Bergen County Freeholder Steve Tanelli criticized four former New Jersey governors who have come out in opposition to the project due to its height.
“Will they tell New York City to redesign their buildings because of the view from New Jersey?” Tanelli asked. “It's obvious the groups that oppose this project do not know the pain of not having a job.” See story in The Record.
