WASHINGTON, DC-Skanska USA has been awarded a $78 million contract by American University to build its new East Campus. The building will be developed to Gold LEED specifications.

The project calls for the conversion of the Nebraska Ave. parking lot into an eight-acre, 340,000-square foot, mixed-use development. The buildings will be a mix of housing, academic and office. They will include three residence halls with 590 beds and three buildings for academic and administrative space. There will also be 345 parking spaces located in underground and surface lots.

AU's Campus Plan was developed with the District of Columbia Zoning Commission. Besides Skanska's East Campus project, the plan also includes AU's new Tenley Campus, home to the school's Washington College of Law (WCL).

The campus will be open for occupancy in fall 2016. The project's architect and designer is Little Diversified.

Skanska is working on two other university projects in the Mid-Atlantic region at the moment -- it is currently expanding the University of Delaware's East Campus Residence Hall Complex, and James Madison University's Duke Hall.
