MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ-Colgate-Palmolive Co. said Tuesday it wants to put its facility here up for sale when it shutters the plant in 2016, according to published reports. The consumer products company said last month it would close the facility, part of an efficiency program it announced last October that's expected to reduce worldwide headcount by 6%.

Colgate's 60-year-old plant at 191 East Hanover Ave. here, which makes liquid hand soap, body wash, antiperspirant and deodorant, will lay off 350 employees beginning early next year. Another 200 will be transferred to another Colgate plant in Piscataway, where an expansion is planned for 2015. The company also plans a new facility in the Southeast.

According to the Hunterdon County Democrat, Colgate said it will work  “in cooperation with county and township officials" to find a buyer for the 49.1-acre site. Accordingly, township administrator Timothy Quinn said the municipality would work with Colgate to make sure “the property remains viable” before the sale, the newspaper reported.

A zoning change for the site, currently zoned as industrial, was a possibility, Quinn added. In township discussions with Colgate officials, “We expressed that we're obviously disappointed they're considering moving to the Southeastern United States,” Quinn told the Democrat, “but that we could certainly assist them or like to be involved in the process of the sale of that property. We want to make sure it doesn't go vacant when they leave.” Click here for the complete article.
