TAMPA-The Tampa Bay Rays, currently battling the Boston Red Sox for first place in the American League Eastern Division, could be playing in a few years at a new stadium built on the site of a former dog track in Sulphur Springs.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Victor Crist suggested the site on Wednesday saying the project site would ensure the taxpayers and the Rays get a return on their investment, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

"I'm just saying this is an alternative that makes sense," Crist said. "I think we should put it on the table and look at it."

The former Tampa Greyhound Track, which is currently home to Lucky's Card Room, is a few miles north of downtown and served by three Interstate 275 exit ramps. Crist says the project could help foster a turnaround for the blighted section of the city.

"Putting a stadium on the downtown waterfront takes very sought-after real estate off the tax rolls," Crist said. "Putting it in this location would be taking undervalued real estate with little or no immediate future of development and turns it into a revenue generator." See story in the Tampa Bay Times.
