RIDGEWOOD, NJ-A chance to finally show the level of opposition to the Valley Hospital expansion project backfired on Tuesday night when village officials canceled the Planning Board hearing due to overcrowding.
After a number of hearings where Valley Hospital officials and consultants discussed the merits of its expansion project, numerous opponents of the project to bring the hospital to about 1 million square feet were expected to testify, according to The Record. A new hearing on the issue will be held in about six weeks.
Village officials say they did not expect that many people would attend the hearing. "We've been having hearings since April and haven't had this issue before," says Kathryn Razin, attorney for the Planning Board. "The board had no reason to anticipate anything differently last night."
Pete McKenna, president of Concerned Residents of Ridgewood, a group opposed to the proposal, said the large turnout was encouraging. "It was an unfortunate incident (the meeting postponement), but this is a good problem," he says. "Now the board can see how many people are coming out for this." See story in The Record.
