SEASIDE PARK, NJ-Business owners in towns dotting the Jersey shoreline are hoping for optimal weather conditions for the Labor Day weekend to help offset what has been described by many as a very quiet summer.
Real estate agents and tourism officials say that revenue so far in the summer of 2013 has been weaker than in 2012. Among the key reasons for the slower sales have been rainy weather in May and June, a prolonged heat wave in July, and the continued after effects of Hurricane Sandy.
Despite an aggressive advertising campaign by the State of New Jersey promoting the Jersey Shore, some visitors stayed due to the perception of widespread damage, according to The Record.
“The problem was that people needed to make plans” last winter, said Linda Stefanik of Stefanik Real Estate in Seaside Park. “All the people who needed to book early, we couldn't make promises about what the beach would be like. They had to make a decision, and they decided, 'Not this year.' We couldn't fight that.”
“Our rentals were off 60%,” said Lee Childers of Childers Sotheby's International Real Estate, which has offices in Bay Head, Lavallette, Normandy Beach, Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Park. “People ask me if there is less inventory or less demand. And I say yes, and yes. It was both.” See story in The Record.
