LINCOLNWOOD, IL-The Purple Hotel here, built in the early 1960s by the Hyatt company, is to be demolished today in order to make room for a mixed-use project.

A host of village officials and other dignitaries were expected to watch a wrecking ball do its work on the storied Purple Hotel that hosted such celebrity guests as Perry Como, Roberta Flack and Barry Manilow. More than six years ago the hotel went into disrepair and the village eventually obtained a court order to demolish the hotel.

"It's sort of bittersweet for me and for everybody in the community to see it go, but also looking forward to the future," says Neal Stein, a principal at North Capital Group, which plans to develop a mixed-use project at the hotel property and adjacent parcels that will include restaurants, retail, office, public space and a new hotel, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Stein's firm, which purchased the property last year, originally filed plans that would have retained the hotel as part of his project. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
