SAVANNAH, GA-Chatham County Commission Chairman Al Scott has shot down a plan by the city of Savannah to have its new arena be a countywide priority project that would be on the next sales tax referendum in November.
The city had requested the commission designate the arena project as a level two priority project that would be eligible to receive funding before other projects on the city's list. The city was requesting $120 million from Chatham County for the arena project, according to the Savannah Morning News. The city had also requested $25 million for a new police headquarters be designed as a priority project as well.
Commissioner Scott says he turned down the request to make the arena a priority project and asked the city to trim down its funding wish list to no more than $190 million.
“I think that is a lot of money,” he says. “That could get them an arena and the police headquarters. They just need to set their priorities.”
Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson says she still hopes to get the arena and police precinct approved as countywide priority projects. See story in the Savannah Morning News.
