PATERSON, NJ- A supermarket set on piers so that it can withstand floods will serve as the anchor of a $35 million downtown redevelopment project here. The market opened Thursday at a site where more commercial space is planned.
Super Supermarket owners Antonio and Jeffrey Perez are the developers of the site at Main Street and Memorial Drive, along the Passaic River. Their 30,000-square-foot store building is elevated and has an underground water tank..
The store was washed out by Hurricane Irene in 2011 and rebuilding began early that year. "If it ever happens again, the water can just go underneath the store and wash back into the river," said Jeffrey Perez.
The first phase of the redevelopment, designed by Hasbrouck Heights-based DMR Architects, includes an Advance Auto Parts franchise and a clock tower.
Super Supermarket operates another store in Paterson, along with locations in Haledon, Orange, Asbury Park.
