ASBURY PARK, NJ-Gloomy skies, and in some places, rain sent many shore visitors scampering for home Monday, but truth be told, the shore has been shy quite a few visitors all summer.
As the Asbury Park Press reports, superstorm Sandy put a damper on things this year from the moment many of the rebuilt boardwalks re-opened - last Memorial Day.
The boardwalk here was in fine shape by opening day of the season. So were many others. Still, road reconstruction, infrastructure replacement, the wait for federal funds to be dispersed – plus the continuing nuisance of storm detritus washing up on the beaches – provided hindrances too large and diverse to mean that shore life could recommence as before.
Beach badge revenue through the end of July was down 10-25% in various towns.
According to Childers Sotheby's International Realty, a real estate agency that has four offices in Ocean County, summer rental income was down 67%.
“People asked me, 'Did you have less properties or less demand?'” said broker Lee Childers. “My answer was, 'Yes and yes.' We had both.” (Read more here.)
