CHICAGO-City officials were expected to join with executives from Austin, TX-based Whole Foods today to announce that the grocer is planning to open a new location on the corner of South Halsted and West 63rd St. in Englewood here.
The store will total approximately 18,000 square feet and will be part of a larger 13-acre development located near Kennedy King Community College aimed at revitalizing the impoverished area, according to Crain's Chicago Business.
The Englewood store will be about half the size of a typical Whole Foods location, but will be similar to a successful store that opened in central Detroit some months back.
Whole Foods will lease the store, which will cost about $3.5 million to build, from developer Leon Walker, whose DL3 Realty LP on the South Side is working on the larger development site. The Whole Foods store is scheduled to open in 2016. The chain currently has six stores in Chicago and another 14 locations in the suburbs. The company has previously reported plans to build another store in Hyde Park, which will open sometime in 2014. See story in Crain's Chicago Business.
