PHILADELPHIA-While Wynn Philadelphia officials say that some artifacts from the storied Dyottville Glass Works may lie beneath a portion of its proposed casino site, a noted archaeologist says that Native American artifacts may lie underground there as well.
The president of the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum, who led a PennDOT dig that ended at the Wynn property's Beach Street border, believes much larger portions of the site hold artifacts from Dyottville, from Native Americans who lived at the site thousands of years ago, and from other industrial uses pre- and post-Dyottville, according to PlanPhilly.com.
“This site is, hands down, one of the most important archaeological sites in Philadelphia,” says the Archaeological Forum's Doug Mooney, a senior archaeologist at URS Corp.
Terry McKenna, Wynn Philadelphia's project manager, says the potential for discoveries does exist, and, if Wynn Philadelphia secures the city's second casino license, it will be fully explored. See story at PlanPhilly.com.
