TRENTON, NJ-A spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie leveled some harsh criticism at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in reaction to a published report that the authority sold the rights to license the name “World Trade Center” for just $10 in 1986.
“You can be sure that would never happen under this administration,” Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said. “I'd venture to say that if something like that was done today, it would probably draw the attention of the United States Attorney's Office.”
Drewniak responded on Monday to a report in The Record the previous day that the naming rights were sold to The World Trade Centers Association 27 years ago.
The Port Authority said on Monday that it had no record of its governing board approving the 1986 deal. The World Trade Centers Association said the deal was not a secret and as recently as 2006 reached an agreement with the Port Authority that allowed the agency to use the name on the buildings now under construction to replace the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan.
