BLOWING ROCK, NC-One of Miami's pioneer real estate developers, Edward N. Claughton Jr. died at the age of 86 on Sept. 7 at his North Carolina home at the Hound Ears Club golf resort.
Perhaps best known as the owner and developer of Brickell Key, Claughton Jr. engineered some of Miami's more notable land deals. His father, Edward Napoleon Claughton Sr., bought Brickell Key in 1943 and renamed it. He, his father, and sister, Suzanne Schmidt, eventually expanded the original five-acre site to 44 acres and after decades in court, began building in 1975. The property is now home to the Mandarin Oriental hotel and thousands of luxury condos, according to the Miami Herald.
Claughton Jr. took over the family's holdings after his father died in 1955. Among his many business interests was the purchase of the Silver Sands Resort on Key Biscayne. He sold Silver Sands in 1986, for $6.6 million. See story in the Miami Herald.
