WASHINGTON, DC-Mayor Vincent Gray's veto of the living wage bill on Thursday will likely result in at least five new Walmart stores to be developed in the district.

Mayor Gray vetoed the bill that would have required Walmart to pay its workers considerably more than the minimum wage. Walmart officials had threatened to kill all its new store projects if the law were enacted, which now will not happen unless the City Council overrides the mayor's veto.

Three of the five new stores are under construction already, according to the Washington Post, with two others in the advanced planning stage. In addition, Walmart still wants to open a store at the corner of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road in Northeast D.C., but recently a developer's plan to build a shopping center there failed.
