BALTIMORE-A ceremonial groundbreaking today officially began work on the $305-mlllion new biomedical research building at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Baltimore campus.

The 429,000-square-foot building, when completed, will be the largest on the university's Baltimore campus, according to the Baltimore Sun. The university is hopeful that the 10-story building will be operational by January 2018.

"The good news has been, we have been very fortunate over the past decade or more in having very rapid growth in our research programs," medical school Dean Dr. E. Albert Reece says. "The bad news is we have just fundamentally run out of space."

Crews will begin demolishing the former School of Dentistry at Baltimore and Pine streets next month to make way for the new building. See story in the Baltimore Sun.
