BOWIE, MD-A plan to shutter the existing Walmart department store in favor of a larger “Super Center” location to be built nearby has some local business owners worried the new store would harm the rural nature of the community.
The proposed new Super Center on Mill Branch Road would total 186,000 square feet and would be built on a 74-acre parcel. It would eventually replace the existing 107,000-square-foot Walmart store on Crain Highway here. The larger store, if built, would be the first Walmart Super Center in Prince George's County, according to Gazette.net.
Walmart spokesperson Amanda Henneberg said of the Bowie store plan, “When we relocate and expand to include super centers, it means we're adding grocery. Grocery is something our customers have come to expect.” She notes that the Bowie store opened in 1993 and lacks many features offered in the chain's newer, larger stores.
The owner of the new Walmart site, William Chesley of Crofton-based W.F. Chesley Real Estate, said he plans to also build additional retail, office space and a hotel on the site. See story at Gazette.net.
