CHICAGO-As expected, the city of Chicago has filed an eminent domain suit in order to acquire property next to McCormick Place where it hopes to have a 1,200-room Marriott Marquis convention hotel constructed.
The litigation filed in Cook County Circuit Court seeks court approval for the city to take land at East Cermak Road, between Michigan and Indiana Avenues. The property's current owner is 121 E. Cermak LLC, an entity managed by construction executive James McHugh, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The lawsuit follows a court action filed last week by McHugh, who charged that the city does not have the right to block his firm's plans to develop an electronic data center at the site.
The convention hotel is part of a planned entertainment district that would be anchored by a multiuse arena that would play host to the DePaul University basketball team. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
