ENGLEWOOD, CO-Craig Hospital has begun a major campus renovation and expansion project designed to position the suburban Denver facility for continued growth and innovation, say the project managers.
The hospital has served as a top-ranked national medical destination since 1956 and currently specializes in traumatic neuro-rehabilitation,
Working within the confines of its campus in Englewood, construction has begun on a phased development with the ultimate goal of bolstering both its inpatient services and its outpatient program through a single, seamless campus. Hammes Company is the developer in charge of the project.
“Our key demographics differ from acute-care hospitals in that our patients are under our care for several months at a time, depending on the severity of their injuries,” says Craig Hospital president and CEO Michael Fordyce. “Our expansion plans will help us to better serve these patients, their families and our community as we consolidate our campus into a single destination for healing.”
The current campus is split among two facilities, and plans call for a new pedestrian plaza to connect the two via a single patient drop-off point. The addition will encompass two inpatient units, adjacent to a concentrated physical therapy area, to be outfitted with all-private rooms for improved safety and patient satisfaction.
The remainder of the new addition's square footage will contain the new home for the PEAK Wellness Center, a fitness and wellness facility complete with a state-of-the-art aquatic therapy p ool, currently serving the disabled community.
“We are renovating and expanding a building that is more than 40 years old, including replacing all supporting infrastructure systems,” says Patrick Chambers, project executive with Hammes Company's Englewood office. “It is important to Craig Hospital's leadership that we maintain the renovation schedule without losing any significant patient capacity. Working in close collaboration with the hospital, the entire project team and the community will allow us to realize that goal as we deliver each phase.”
In addition to Hammes Company, the project team includes construction manager GE Johnson Construction Co., Colorado Springs, Colo.; architects RTA Architects, Colorado Springs, and SmithGroupJJR, Detroit; and engineer Shaffer Baucom Engineering & Consulting, Lakewood.
“This is a very ambitious project for Craig Hospital and Hammes Company is proud to be a part of it,” says Todd Reynolds, regional VP with Hammes Company's Englewood location. “Doubling their outpatient services and modernizing the facilities will create a unified campus under a single efficient operating model.”
