MILWAUKEE-Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. will be unveiling the design of what will be one of Milwaukee's tallest office buildings later this week.

The insurer plans to build a new $450-million, 32-story office tower on its downtown campus near Lake Michigan, according to the Wall Street Journal. When the office building opens, it will be the state of Wisconsin's largest single-tenant office building.

Architectural firm Pickard Chilton of New Haven, CT., designed the building that will offer lake views from loft-style open offices. The top floor will be public space that will feature a conference room and a larger room with vaulted ceilings that can be used for meetings and other events, according to Jon Pickard, co-founding principal at Pickard Chilton.

The tower's bottom three-story base named the Commons, will include a company cafeteria, spaces for informal meetings, and a steet level public cafe. It will also connect to existing buildings on its campus.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett believes the new tower is a positive sign for the city. “It's a sign that the economy is starting to come back," he says. See story in the Wall Street Journal.
