LAKELAND FL-Reports of building applications for major warehouse projects here and in Ruskin are the latest developments in the mystery saga of where online retailer Amazon will build its massive distribution center in Central Florida.

Amazon remains mum on the issue, while reports from the Ledger newspaper of Lakeland indicate that Conlan Co., which has built an Amazon warehouse in Chattanooga, TN, was issued a building permit for a “fulfillment center” in Lakeland earlier this month. A published report in the Tampa Bay Times states that a USAA affiliate, a major landlord of Amazon, has applied for a building permit for a 1.1-million-square-foot warehouse.

As economic development agencies in Hillsborough and Polk counties get their respective incentive packages finalized, an Amazon spokesperson on Friday stated in an e-mail to the Tampa Bay Business Journal that there was nothing new to report on the company's plans in the Sunshine State.
