BETHLEHEN, PA-Gov. Tom Corbett and Walmart executives jointly announced on Monday that the retailer will open a 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center here by the first quarter of 2014.
The fulfillment center will employ more than 350 year-round workers, and its payroll will double with temporary workers during the holiday season, according to the Morning Call. According to a company press release, the Bethlehem fulfillment center will be the discount retailer's largest ever.
“Walmart's announcement today represents more than 350 good, well-paying jobs for people of the Lehigh Valley and we congratulate them on their choice of Pennsylvania for this critical expansion," stated Gov. Corbett. "As Walmart moves forward with expansion of its e-commerce business we will be a partner in ensuring Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley remain a continued part of that growth."
Walmart employs 49,000 associates in Pennsylvania, where it operates 110 "super centers," 24 discount stores and 23 Sam's Clubs. The company also has seven distribution centers in the state.
On Monday, Walmart also announced it was opening an 800,000-square-foot distribution center in Fort Worth, TX. That facility began taking orders last week. The Fort Worth facility will be operated by Brentwood, TN-based OHL, a global supply chain management solutions company. The Bethlehem, PA center will be fully operated by Walmart.
