NEW YORK CITY-The impacts of the federal government shutdown became apparent on Tuesday as popular tourist attractions were shut down and thousands of public workers were furloughed from federal public parks here and across the nation.
In Battery Park, tourists were notified that the Statue of Liberty was closed due to the government shutdown.
Unaffected for the moment were the federal court operations in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County, which will operate at full staff for the next 10 business days, according to the Wall Street Journal. However, officials with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, which covers Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island, say they might need to furlough workers after Oct. 15.
Throughout the New York City region, military workers and other federal employees categorized as essential have been ordered to work, but their paychecks will be withheld until the shutdown is lifted. See story in the Wall Street Journal.
