ORLANDO-The Orlando City Council unanimously approved a plan on Monday to help finance a new professional soccer stadium in the city.
The measure passed by a 7-0 margin. The bill now goes before the Orange County Commission for a possible vote on Oct. 22. The plan calls for some funding for the new stadium for the Orlando City Soccer Club, which is believed to be a candidate for the next MLS franchise.
The council also approved the general terms that would allow the soccer team to be the main tenant of the city-owned stadium, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The stadium would have a construction budget of $69 million; together with hard and soft costs, the final price tag for the stadium is estimated at $84 million.
The overall $94.5-million agreement approved by the council, includes funding for the stadium, extra funds for the construction of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center and the renovation of the Citrus Bowl, and more monies earmarked for tourism marketing. See story in the Orlando Sentinel.
