ELIZABETH, NJ-The Union County Improvement Authority has put out a request for proposals that could mean a sale of Runnels Specialized Hospital by next July.

The RFP seeks companies interested in buying or running the county-owned facility. The hospital, set on 45 acres in Berkeley Heights, has been a cash drain for the county, having racked up revenue shortfalls totaling $100 million since 2006, according to the Star Ledger.

The hospital's shortfalls increased greatly about two years ago, county officials said, to approximately $22 million in 2012 and $17 million in 2011. Most of the hospital's losses were due to reductions in federal Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements. See story in the Star Ledger.
