NEWARK-Mayor Cory Booker's campaign to bring a Whole Foods store to the city has come to pass.
The specialty grocer was expected to announce today that it had signed a 29,000-square-foot lease at the Hahne building in the downtown district, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Whole Foods will be the anchor in the redevelopment of the historic Hahne building, a 417,600-square-foot property that has been vacant for decades. Whole Foods currently has 10 locations in the state of New Jersey.
"We aren't having to sell the story of Newark," said Jon Cortell, a vice president of L+M Development Partners, a New York City firm that is co-developing the building with a local firm. He added that interest from other national retailers to lease space at the Hahne project has been strong. See story in the Wall Street Journal.
