NEW YORK CITY-The New York City Council and a tenants group have filed suit to block a plan by the Bloomberg administration to lease land at public housing projects to allow private market rate housing development.
The litigation filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan stems over the plan by the New York City Housing Authority to raise revenue to pay for needed repairs and other capital improvements at its public housing properties. The plan would allow the authority to lease land to private developers at eight public housing projects in Manhattan, according to the New York Times.
The Housing Authority has given developers a Nov. 18 to submit expressions of interest in the program. Attorneys representing the City Council and tenants say the lawsuit is intended to prevent the city from executing any deals with developers before Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's term is over.
