MIAMI-The Genting Group has undertaken some demolition work in and around the former headquarters of the Miami Herald in hopes that it will eventually secure the necessary approvals to build its planned casino resort at the site.
The Malaysia-based conglomerate has demolished the two-story parking garage adjacent to the Herald building. In addition, the firm has torn down the entrance to the main building that sits on the water, according to the South Florida Business Journal.
Genting acquired the 14-acre Herald site for $236 million and plans to build residences, retail, a boat dock and a hotel on the property. The developer has thus far tried in vain to convince state lawmakers to grant it a license to operate a casino in downtown Miami. See story in the South Florida Business Journal.
