NANUET, NY-The Shops at Nanuet, the first new mall product to come on line in 15 years that can be viewed as competition to Bergen County's malls, opened for business on Thursday.
The project that involved the redevelopment of the shuttered Nanuet Mall, was projected by local officials to have cost owner Simon Properties approximately $150 million. About half of the 50 planned stores opened for business on the open-air mall's first day of business. Among its major tenants include an Apple store and a Fairway Market.
"We think this is going to be one of the go-to places that is going to draw people from a big area," said Alexander Gromack, supervisor of the Town of Clarkstown. He added that he believes visitors from Bergen County, "especially on Sundays," will frequent the 750,000-square-foot development.
"The reason we're here is the market. This is a phenomenal market," said Tom Schneider, a Simon executive vice president. The mall is expected to draw residents of Montvale and Park Ridge, which border Rockland County, and from North Jersey towns along the Garden State Parkway and Palisades Interstate Parkway.
