WASHINGTON, DC-With the recession in the rear view mirror, developers are now busy building new office and multifamily projects in the district. The pipeline of new product coming on line will strain and could possibly overwhelm the Metro system.
Developers have been busy buying land, securing approvals and breaking ground on new office and apartment projects from Reston to New Carrollton, according to the Washington Post. More than 12,000 new apartments became available in 2012 and about the same number will come on line by the end of this year. Many of these new projects are being built near Metro train stations.
Shyam Kannan, director of planning for Metro, said that the new construction shows the value the transit service provides.
“All of those things, that's good,” he said. “The concern we have now is the system is kind of busting at the seams. Anyone who has been in Metro Center or Gallery Place or L'Enfant or the Blue Line knows that we are getting really, really crowded.” See story in the Washington Post.
