NEW YORK CITY-The New York City Planning Commission is expected to officially begin the approval process for the redevelopment of the former Domino Sugar refinery in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn next week.
The $1.5-billion mixed-use plan by Two Trees Management at the outset has not sparked as much criticism as an earlier proposal that had opponents protest against the project at City Hall, according to the New York Times.
“The fact of the matter is, this neighborhood's changed so much in the last 10 years, and I don't necessarily see it stopping,” says Matthew Viragh, the owner of Nitehawk Cinema, an independent movie theater a few blocks from the factory that shut down in 2004. “If Two Trees doesn't develop this, somebody else will, is sort of my mentality, unfortunately.”'
The refinery will be converted to office space. The plan calls for office, residential and retail space in a series of high-rise towers. See story in the New York Times.
