NEW YORK CITY-At a conference hosted by the Municipal Art Society of New York on Thursday, city officials revealed additional elements to the proposed Midtown East rezoning plan.
Bloomberg administration officials reported the plan, which would also allow developers to build 60% more space than under current zoning regulations, will also involve: the creation of public plazas at Pershing Square; new larger, walkable medians along Park Avenue, with seating and artwork; and extended sidewalks and more seating at seven busy subway stops, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Another new component of the rezoning plan highlighted at the session include construction of an elevated pedestrian pathway, similar to the High Line elevated park, to be built on the viaduct that surrounds Grand Central Terminal.
"Usually you can only experience the viaduct while you're sitting in a car," said Daniel Hernandez, a managing director at urban planner Jonathan Rose Cos. "Those of you New Yorkers who have experienced the space on bicycle know the viaduct is a remarkable open space." See story in the Wall Street Journal.
