ANNAPOLIS, MD-The 16-day federal shutdown cost the country $24 billion, according to Standard & Poor's. In Maryland, many companies felt the pinch and 20,000 federal workers filed for unemployment during the shutdown.
Among some of the Maryland-based companies impacted by the shutdown included URS Corp., which furloughed 3,000 employees, and Lockheed Martin Corp., which furloughed 2,400 of its workers. BAE Systems laid off 1,100 workers, but 600 were returned to work on Oct. 15.
Standard & Poor's estimates that the shutdown cost the US economy 0.6% in projected GDP growth. See story in the Baltimore Business Journal.
