NEW YORK CITY-The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission granted approval on Tuesday to Extell Development's plan to cantilever its tower building on West 57th St. so that it overhangs the American Fine Arts Society Building.
The New York City-based developer was given the go-ahead to extend its residential tower building at 215 W. 57th St, some 28 feet east to overhang the American Fine Arts Society building, according to Crain's New York Business.
Extell will begin cantilevering at 195 feet. The tower building, the developer has stated, could be 1,400 feet or higher.
Landmark Preservation Commission Chairman Robert Tierney said of its decision on the Extell plan, "I think it's not only an extremely important project for the city, but also important for what it doesn't do, which is that it ultimately will not have a negative impact on the landmark. Here we have a very narrow exposure to something that I believe will have a very negligible effect." See story in Crain's New York Business.
