NEW YORK CITY-The One57 condominium tower, where two duplex apartments sold for $90 million each recently, is one of about a dozen needle-thin towers planned in New York City.
Carol Willis, the founder of Manhattan's Skyscraper Museum, calls them “a new type in the history of the skyscraper.” She adds, “The economy of land values drives what can be built,” Willis said.
The One57 condo building is just one of a number of needle-thin towers on or near 57th Street, according to Bloomberg News. Designed by Paris architect Christian de Portzamparc, the tower rises to 1,000 feet, and is located near Carnegie Hall and its tallest floors offer views of Central Park and midtown Manhattan.
