UPPER GWYNEDD, PA-Pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. Inc. has notified the state of Pennsylvania it intends to eliminate 500 jobs at its West Point facility here during the Christmas holidays.

According to a WARN notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, the layoffs will take place between Dec. 23 and Jan. 5, 2014, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The West Point facility is a research and manufacturing facility that also serves as the divisional headquarters for Merck's vaccines business and its U.S. commercial operations. The company announced plans to cut 8,500 jobs companywide on Oct. 1. Merck employs approximately 12,000 workers in Pennsylvania, the majority of which are located in Upper Gwynedd.
