WASHINGTON, DC-A group of activists led by consumer advocate Ralph Nader has fought against a public-private partnership to renovate and develop around the West End Neighborhood Library here. Opposition to this and other public-private land deals could jeopardize other major projects in the district.

Those against the West End Library plan criticize the sale price of the land. The district intends to sell the land to a private developer who will build more than 150 luxury apartments and retail space—in addition to the library, firehouse and affordable housing at the site.

In recent weeks, a lawyer affiliated with Nader's group asked the District's U.S. attorney to investigate the deal, according to the Washington Post. In addition, the opposition by some to similar public-private land deals could affect other projects, such as Mayor Vincent C. Gray's proposed new professional soccer stadium that would be financed by trading a city office building for privately-held land. See story in the Washington Post.
