MIAMI-A campaign by City Commissioner Jonah Wolfson and the non-profit Miami Beach Residents for Responsible Development to require a supermajority vote to ratify the convention center redevelopment plan was successful on Tuesday.

Voters approved the measure to change the city charter to require the supermajority vote on the convention center plan, which appears to turn aside the approval the city commission granted developer South Beach ACE in June. The commission approved the South Beach ACE plan by a majority, but not a supermajority vote (two-thirds).

The city of Miami Beach could be vulnerable to litigation from the developer, according to the South Florida Business Journal. South Beach ACE had started negotiations with the city on a final development agreement for the more than $1-billion project. See story in the South Florida Business Journal.
