PHILADELPHIA-Temple University officials confirmed in a letter to the Philadelphia School District its intent to purchase the shuttered William Penn High School here.

Ray Betzner, a spokesman for Temple University, says the university has no specific plan for the five-acre property on Broad Street. The school opened in 1973 and closed in 2010, according to The Inquirer.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter signed a bill last week that advanced $60 million to the school district, which agreed to turn over proceeds from school-property sales to the city.

William Penn High School's market value was listed at $32 million by the city's Office of Property Assessment. See story in The Inquirer.
