BALTIMORE-A $160-million critical care building opened on Friday at the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in downtown Baltimore.
The university officially opened the 140,000-square-foot tower building that adds 64 private patient rooms and 10 operating rooms to the state's largest trauma center, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.
University of Maryland Medical Center CEO Jeffrey Rivest said the Shock Trauma Center was originally designed to treat about 3,500 patients a year, but has recently treated between 7,000 and 8,000 a year. With the new space, the center expects to be able to see 8,500 patients a year.
The tower project was supported by $50 million in state funds, $2 million in federal funding and $35 million in private philanthropic donations. See story in the Baltimore Business Journal.
