NEW YORK CITY-After politicos sunk a plan by Related Cos. to build a mall at the site in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, the City Council is expected to give New York Rangers' hero Mark Messier's firm final approval to build an indoor ice rink at the site later this month.

Bronx elected officials rejected Related's mall plan for its failure to guarantee compensation of $11.50 an hour to the 1,200 permanent workers it would have employed. The City Council is expected to approve on Dec. 16 the final major land-use application during the Bloomberg administration, according to Crain's New York Business.

The $275-million Kingsbridge National Ice Center would convert 750,000 square feet of abandoned space into a complex featuring nine rinks.

"If this is the last one, it's a very worthy final approval for Mayor Bloomberg," said Messier, the CEO of the proposed Kingsbridge National Ice Center. "This will be a big step in a borough that's been bypassed for a long time." See story in Crain's New York Business.
