WASHINGTON, DC-Overcoming some bitter criticism over wages, retail giant Walmart opened two stores in the district on Wednesday.
The stores at 5929 Georgia Ave. NW and 99 H St. NW are both less than the typical 110,000 square feet urban location, according to the Washington Post.
The retail giant first disclosed its intentions for the district in 2010. The 99 H St. store totals 73,000 square feet, while the Georgia Ave. store comes in at approximately 103,000 square feet, according to the Washington Business Journal.
The DC Council passed legislation in July that would have forced Wal-Mart and other non-union big-box stores to pay a “living wage” of $12.50 an hour, a significant hike from the district's minimum wage of $8.25. DC Mayor Vincent Gray vetoed the measure. See story in the Washington Post.
