SARASOTA, FL-The University of Florida may have to go back to the drawing board now that the Hilton Garden Inn adjacent to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport has been sold to a New York City-based investment firm.
The 115-room hotel was acquired by Excel Sarasota 1 LLC for $10.8 million from Thayer Lodging Group, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The University of Florida had indicated its intent to buy the 115-room hotel along U.S. 41 for student housing. The plan was part of a larger $50-million expansion blueprint.
The student-housing plan at the hotel appears to be on the back burner at best. “Everything there is in limbo,” says Ruth Lando, a USF spokeswoman. “We are not moving forward with any plans or negotiations with them right now. We still have a desire at some point to have student residences, but whether it will be there or elsewhere, there's absolutely no movement on that . . . There's no current communication.” See story in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
