PHOENIX-A vacant building at Dunlap and Central avenues here will be the site of a new Walmart Neighborhood Market grocery store by the middle of next year.

The retail giant reports that it will renovate the building in the Sunnyslope area of the city into a 43,619-square-foot store, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. A company statement reports that construction on the project will begin in a few weeks. The building has been vacant since 2010.

“We have worked closely with our friends at Marketplace at Central to land this store which will bring new jobs and a wonderful amenity to the neighborhood,” says Phoenix Vice Mayor Bill Gates. “We are confident that the Neighborhood Market will be a great community partner and successful retailer in Sunnyslope.”

This past March, Walmart opened a smaller Neighborhood Market grocery store in Chandler on the campus of Arizona State University. See story in the Phoenix Business Journal.
